Catching Up With Costa Brazil

The Conservatory O.G. Francisco Costa on buying his brand back and what’s next.

When the Conservatory launched five years ago, Costa Brazil was one of our debut brands for obvious reasons: a sticky resinous scent from the Amazon, an environmentally sustainable mission, and super chic white and silver packaging that didn’t—and still doesn’t—look like anything else out there. It has never left our shelves but behind-the-scenes, its ownership has shifted, and we’re happy to share it is back in the hands of the visionary talent of its founder, Francisco Costa. Here, he shares in his own words, lessons learned and what’s next:

WHY IT’S ESPECIALLY GOOD TO BE BACK:

“One of our strongest pillars besides making people feel good is sustainability. But what that really is, is people, the ones who take care of the Amazon forest in Brazil, and hold the key to the magic which keeps it alive. We have to be successful because we believe we can support the communities there. So that’s the true excitement of bringing this brand back.

This is not about a powerpoint presentation, it’s a love mark. It’s a community of legit people who understand where we want to go. It’s great and enlightening to see people who use the products – they’re gorgeous but normal in the best way possible. We will try to present them with options to feel better, to enhance themselves with experiential products that are very trustworthy. 

It was sad to lose the brand and feel like I was letting people and myself down. I think we inspired people in many ways for how they engage with products from nature, and understand that the results are more spiritual than sticking something on. We went through a tough period. I’ve learned so much from the process. In hindsight, I see that this is our moment.”

A FOCUS ON BODY…

“Beauty really lies in the skin itself. that biome of feeling good and the connection to the planet and what the planet brings you. 

The brand was born with the body. We’re about the touch and the feel. We want people to experience the body intimately with our products. There is a new pipeline to provide with the customer everything they need to have a healthy wonderful life and not feeling self conscious about having to build, build, build. Our body wash comes in scented or unscented forms, and we’re very excited to launch shampoo and conditioner soon. It’s all very touchy, you just want to keep using it. It has a quality that’s very special. It blooms!”

“I also love the world of fragrance. We have developed 12 fragrances and have great expectations to create a new world where the fragrance is more than smelling good but feeling good. I like scents that make me feel calmer. We have a new floral candle coming.”

“The singular thing we can provide is that the science of nature is superior. We’re going to further engage in the nature of Brazil by finding more localized producers when it comes to packaging so we can reduce our carbon footprint. With our breu, it’s already there, because the manufacturer is simply nature itself.”
