Celeste Markey

Our Curriculum Vitae Q&A with Celeste Markey; co-founder of sustainable, ready-to-wear brand Careste. Careste was founded by two fashion luxury veterans who aim to disrupt traditional luxury retail and #EndFashionWaste.

“Sustainable forms of retail and supply chain are our passion. Modern women’s values are changing, and it’s up to us to pioneer new, sustainable business models to serve them.”

Their direct to consumer model disrupts traditional luxury retail by eliminating the excess time and costs of storing pre-made product in multiple warehouses, unsold sizes and waste, and runway shows that increase carbon footprint.

Best thing about where you are from?
The best thing about where I’m from is that I’m from many different places! Though the majority of the past 20 years have been between NYC and The Bay Area, so, I would say the best thing about those two cities is the diversity in culture and thought as well as the appreciation of innovation and love of the natural world.

It’s hard not to be reminiscent of the past, and distracted by the future. How do you strive to live in the moment?
Having a business and small children at the same time will really keep one grounded in the moment. There is literally no time for anything other than the here and now! Because my daughter was not even 1 when we started Careste the past few years feel like an absolute blur – in a good way.

What does Considered Luxury mean to you?
Considered luxury to us means being mindful of every element of our brand and product, and as well as conveying and exemplifying a deeper meaning and purpose other than typical consumerism. We all crave elegant and beautiful things, but our hope is to create something beautiful that is crave-worthy while also leaving the world a better place.

What was the inspiration behind starting your brand?
Elizabeth and I wanted to do something together that was really meaningful. We’ve both been part of so many different businesses that we knew that at this point in our lives, that our time needed to be spent on something with deeper meaning and also with people who share the same values. We are both very passionate about sustainability as well as considered luxury, and so it was easy to come together and create the raison d’etre for the brand and the collections. Our inspiration was really the simple thought of creating a brand that embodies the modern luxury lifestyle: considered, sustainable and beautiful.

Give three words that describe your brand.
Beautiful. Elegant. Effortless.
