Selima Salaun pushed passed fear to pursue passion.
Selima Salaun has built a beautiful life through passion, obsession and some dare say addiction to her love affair with collecting vintage; most notably eyewear.
“You know I always collected. I am an optician…an optometrist by trade, I was working in Paris, and when I moved here [to New York] I started to go to all the flea markets and everything and started buying vintage eyewear,” she explains. Finding herself faced with the dreaded mundane in her initial career, Selima said YES to change. “I love to discover…. I was living in Soho and I was working by this amazing space. Back in the day you could open an amazing store in Soho and not go bankrupt. And I opened the store!” Selima has always chased her sense of discovery and passion for people. “It was much easier to do something and be completely independent, and not having fear to do it or fail or anything like that.”
Selima has a quirk and sensibility all her own. Her vast vintage catalog and Selima Optique, her namesake eyewear brand, deliver an unrivaled collection of frames, where fashion meets function. You could spend hours exploring her frames and not see them all. Selima’s warm spirit and deep collection of frames have outfitted peepers for the likes of Bono, Liv Tyler and Madonna, to name a few.
“It was much easier to do something and be completely independent, and not having fear to do it or fail or anything like that.”
One never dares to ask a parent who their favorite child is, but we asked Selima if she favored a particular frame. “I would say maybe the one I wear all the time. It’s funny because I always come back to the style. It’s called The Amanda and I change the color only, but I have been wearing the same frame for years because I love it. It’s timeless. Very simple. No logo, nothing.”
